Jack and the Beanstalk.

Back in week 2 we read the story "Jack and the Beanstalk".
We planted our own magic beans!

Today we are bringing them home to plant in our own gardens. Do you think they'll eventually reach the clouds?  Will we find the goose that lays golden eggs?  Happy growing!

Science!

Our first term unit is all about water!  Where you find it, what we use it for, how we an conserve it and how the water cycle works.
We have been on a water walk around the school to see where we can access water for when we need to use it.
A power point of our walk can be viewed on the year 2 website under the science tab:

We have also made rain!

Our First Fairy Tale.

This term we have begun our study of narratives and we are looking at their structure and what is involved in writing a fairy tale.  Before we write our own, we are doing lots of collaborative work and working on our own class fairy tale together.  This is our first attempt.  We hope you like it!

Leo the elf and his adventures in the magical forest.
By 2H
Once upon a time there lived an elf called Leo and his favourite colour was red.  He lived in a magic forest.
One day, Leo went for a walk and met his friend Ben, the troll.  Ben’s favourite colour was green.  Ben also liked to smash things with his hands.
On their walk they came to a castle and they saw the mean and greedy giant.  The giant was busy counting his gold coins.  Leo and Ben were being very noisy and they disturbed the greedy giant.
The giant got very angry when he was disturbed from his counting.  When he saw Leo and Ben he remembered how Ben had smashed the window of the castle last week. The giant had warned them to never come back to his castle or there would be trouble! He caught them and threw them into his dungeon.
Leo was able to use elf magic to shrink himself.  He climbed through the bars of the dungeon and found the key.  He unlocked the bars and let Ben out.
Leo tricked the giant by creating a big pot of gold coins to lure the greedy giant into the dungeon.  When he was behind the bars they locked him in.  Ben smashed the key into little pieces and they threw the tiny pieces into the ocean where a shark ate the pieces.

They quickly ran away back to the magic forest and they lived happily ever after with no giant to bother them anymore.

Ukelele!

Today we were very lucky to have the talented Mike Jackson, ukelele extraordinaire visit St Catherine's. The year two were lucky to have a 40 minute workshop with Mike.  The children learnt 3 chords and we're able to play along with Mike using his easy Uke'n Play method.

Welcome to 2H

Hello everyone and welcome to 2H!
I am very excited to be teaching year two again this year and we had a great start to the year last week.  A couple of unsettled days while cyclone Dylan passed us and we are back into it this week.  The students have been working hard and are showing me that they are keen and eager to learn!

Just a reminder that we have P.E. on Tuesdays and the students can wear their sports uniform on this day.  Swimming starts on Friday.  Children will need to bring their swimmers, a rash vest and a towel.  Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to assist us with swimming this term.
Don't forget parent information evening next Wednesday 12th February.  See you all then.
